My First D&D Experience

By Logan Sennett

My very first D&D experience is a fond memory to me and turned out to be the beginning of a passionate hobby I now have. Although it wasn’t the first time playing the game for me, it is the earliest I remember of it. I must’ve been around 8 or 9 at the time, playing with a few of my friends from school, with my dad acting as the DM of the game. We were a party of 3 adventuring going from level 1 through to about level 7 or 8, I was a wizard, and my two friends played a cleric and rogue respectively.

We were approaching the end of a dungeon, where a young white dragon sat through a tunnel from us in a larger room, functioning as the boss of the dungeon.

We, as a party, were very new to D&D and didn’t entirely realise that these dragons were inherently evil or really what they were about. So being relatively naive we tried to negotiate with it, the dragon kept insisting we had to meet face to face to talk it out, as we were still hiding by this tunnel that the dragon couldn’t get through. Eventually, the cleric gave in and walked out into the tunnel as it couldn’t be that bad right? The rogue soon followed, fully aware of his Uncanny Dodge ability that would allow him to avoid most incoming danger, and I, as a weak, low health wizard remained far back. This was the moment we realised some dragons were not particularly nice, as we were met with its breath weapon that nearly killed our cleric.  Immediately and thankfully the rogue rolled well, and I didn’t need to at all but it made for an interesting and sudden start to the combat.

I think the reason I remember this moment so vividly is because it was so sudden, and it functioned as a big learning point for all 3 of us, all just children. The dragon, (played by my dad) was surprisingly deceptive and shocked us all when it attacked, even if I was especially cautious, I didn’t expect anything to come of it.

This was one of the defining moments that really got me into D&D, interesting interactions like these between players and even enemies or other characters serve to make for such memorable moments. Not to mention it started a very tense and panic-fuelled combat session.

Nowadays, I prefer to sit back and take a DMing role as ensuring I can give these types of memories to new or even more experienced players is important to me.

I firmly believe that D&D is a game that should be full of these fun moments and it’s why we love it!
